Diffractive structures from polymeric composite materials with ferroelectric and ferromagnetic liquid crystals

Project Lead: Martin Fally
Lifetime: 2023-2024

Scientific Aims:

Only recently, nematic liquid crystals with ferroelectric or ferromagnetic ordering were discovered. Unlike in standard nematic liquid crystals (LC) their polar character consequently also leads to macroscopic polarity. This property allows to induce orientational changes by applying rather low external electric or magnetic fields and thus to influence the structure. The aim of the proposed project is to prepare polymeric ferroelectric and ferromagnetic liquid crystal composite materials, to create diffractive structures for light and neutrons and to explore their properties.
